OK...maybe I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to make realistic render. BTW I find lighting inseparable from materials. Good lighting + bad mats = bad render, Bad lighting + good materials = bad render.

It is quite impressive model . I remember seeing it on one of the render off competriotions. Got to admitt you did great job in cleanning it and adopting it for SU. Escher not the most appropriate example but I do know what you mean. However to get photoreal feel one ultimately has to do what is phisicaly correct.

Of course it is possible to have cantilivered stairs but we are talking about these ones here. As they stand they would buckle. They also look like timber construction pretending to be steel.
