From the manual:
Depth Render
Renders a greyscale image that assigns different values of grey for different distances from the camera. Useful for
post-production in a photo editing program when manually recreating a Depth Of Field effect, or complex masking,
fog effects, or other post-production tonemapping or highlighting techniques.

Make a regular render with any preset you like:

Make a Depth Render (Express > Advanced) and play with the gamma setting. Here I used gamma 0.1:

Place the depth render over the regular one in your photo editor, switch the blend mode of top layer to "screen" and play with the layer opacity. Here it is with opacity 50%. Also try with other blend modes for different results.

Another great thread on doing Fog in Post Pro using different techniques, of course by the famous "Rafa" at Kerkythea.net.
There's even one about doing "Steam" in post production (post-pro).
There's even one about doing "Haze" in post production (post-pro).
