I'm working on a fan animation, and because depth renders render so quickly I decided to do a quick animation. This animation was more than 400 frames and rendered on my dual-core in about 2 hours.
The lighting of the actual scene gives it much more interest, but takes a lot longer to animate... I'll have to leave it running over the weekend!
SketchyPhysics motor. The blades were modeled in Wings because I'm not good enough at modeling in SU yet.

Re: Depth animation
Nice trick... it never occurred to me to use depth render for this.
Any link to a good Wings3D tutorial or guide?

Re: Depth animation
tutorial to use wings:
Download, open it, right click on main view... start drawing.
that's pretty much it, if I remember correctly. very easy to use.

Re: Depth animation
Wings is pretty easy to use, but, at least in my opinion, it's very different from SU. Unfortunately I don't know of any good tutorials but I bet they are out there.
Here's an updated video. The lighting isn't what I want; I want to get so strong shadows on the ground and walls, so I'll have to orient it differently, maybe shorten the casing. But I like the overall back lighting effect. This was rendered with Interior+, 10 iterations per frame (so a lot of static).

for those not aware... to render quick animation tests:Chris wrote:...because depth renders render so quickly I decided to do a quick animation.
use very small size and the same fps for final output (if wanting to check every frame in case you are worried about odd camera behavior, or use 5fps for a very quick video check)
use Tech setting>Specialized>DiffuseTexturePass
I will add this topic to Tips and Tricks.
