What's the deal...

Post by tomsdesk » Wed Aug 18, 2010 2:55 pm

...the outside component renders in a different location than shown in SU (plus there's a strange thing happening with reflections in the upper right corner of the windows and the outside jamb shows curved) and what happened to the window frame shadows on the floor? The field of view is set at 53deg, but that never did this before...?

hmm... can you share the scene?
did you accidentally choose "weld" check box in a material?

A couple of materials were checked "weld" (I don't know how or why), the yellow blimp tanks and the window frames, but unchecking them had no effect on the blimp or the curving window jamb? (I also exploded the blimp component to no avail and added another SU native component which did the same thing outside the room: rendered further away.) The scene is from here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtop ... 45#p263441 and the blimp model is also from a recent SUC thread. Emailed my compilation model to Twilight Support.

"Weld" would never distort the geometry like that. What about hidden geometry?

Also, did you make sure you are rendering the view you expect to be seeing? In the Camera menu, in the Render window do you have "Current View" selected?

Hey Chris...hidden geometry never mattered before (I don't render edge lines) but tried it anyway: no difference? Yes, rendering current view (and none of the other scenes are like the render)...?

Also, forgot to mention: the window frame shadows on the floor are all missing (some were missing before I added the blimp, but not all)...?

use Architectural Glass>No Shadow or Common,
realistic glass is refracting the geometry beyond.

Regarding the shadows, I have a problem with the Twilight rendered shadows being 30 minutes ahead of the Sketchup shadows.

This means that when I select the time of day that suits the shadows cast on (or inside) a building, I then have to re-set the the time by deducting 30 minutes so that the Twilight scene renders where I want those shadows.

Perhaps you are experiencing the same issue.

Fletch explained the reason when I bought it up last year. Apparently it's not an easy thing to fix.

Fletch...that solved it all, thanks! Never noticed this before, but usually don't muck around with field of view: is this what caused the rather drastic refraction reaction?

Are the windows very thick? As in real-life, thick glass refracts heavily. Maybe they are much thicker than you normally use?

No, Chris, the window panes are a single face...no thickness.
