Re: Another chair challenge...
bloody hell these look great!! the translucent/transparent materials are outstanding!! I take it you bought the subsmooth ruby?
I love the third set, very nice. looks like you would be sitting on ice cubes!!
metal could do with some more shine though......
with some fine tuning these are definitely gallery images. the studio environment (geometry, not the light) is too sharp in my opinion. (are you just using a ground plane and the background is actually the hdri?) if so.....make a curved studio backdrop while still using hdri.
This is one from the kerkythea website.....but try other variations.
I have also attached a sketchup file containing three studios I have made. Enjoy.

THANX OLY
yes it's the Hdri in background. Thanx for your comment and your studio sharing. I will test with those, I already did with some curved of mine and I find it breaks the reflexions...
For the rest it's all about using Subdivide&smooth in a very specific way and of course twilight...
Here are some more complex models inspired from existing design... first is from Calligaris, and second from Karim Rachid.

Re: Another chair challenge...
nice. see when looking down on the object you don't need a background, hdri is just fine.
having a proper studio as a background (for the other renders) won't necessarily interrupt your light and reflections. Try it, you won't notice much difference, it will only look more realistic. If you are bothered about losing the slightest bit of light, just add a couple of emitters over your object.....but to be honest it's not necessary. You should not be able to see the hdri, it is far too small in resolution.
look at my glass chair renders ...... http://twilightrender.com/phpBB3/viewto ... =16&t=1784 ..... having a studio backdrop only increases the realism....In a REAL studio environment photographers would NOT illuminate the object from behind....in fact the reflection off the studio backdrop is more than enough.

Re: Another chair challenge...
Thanx Oli I am just getting in to use the studio you provide me...
To try with those I am working on new challenging model (surprise..!) It's cooking and will soon be ok to show...
So I am also working on my future Website, and my already beginning Blog...
First message in the blog is about those chair designs so take a look:
http://archigrafix-architectureinfograp ... gspot.com/
I will soon put more and more infos, materials, models, tutos there.
Opinions are welcome!
Fletch: thanx for the compliment... Coming from you I really appreciate

Re: Another chair challenge...
Fletch, may we hope for a "shadow catcher" one day in TWL? Cause it would be the best solution for HDR light and background + shadows on the floor.
In fact it's just an invisible plane that "catch" the shadows to make them visible..?

Re: Another chair challenge...
yes, this is a nice wish, and important for studio renders.
perhaps we will fulfill this wish in the future, but for now best you can do is render a white ground plane and render model with a clay render setting, then isolate the show on a layer over your final image background, desaturate the image, and use "multiply" blend mode in your photo editor for the shadow layer.
