Thanks paappleb, sounds like a great idea! We will try an evening shot. If you had a photo to post, it would be really great. Or time of year you think we should try.
We may need to change the orientation of the building to be more accurate, we have not verified it's position relative to north. It's likely this much direct sunlight would not happen as shown below. ;)

Here is a different camera angle for the Sanctuary. This exercise is to see the difference between a "Raw Render" output and a "Tonemapped" result.
Digital photographers still use photoshop on many of their images to bring out certain details they wish to show. Rendering 3D models is no different in this regard. You may need to tweak the results to see what you want to see.

Revisiting tone mapping of the image after what we have learned from the image above...

You are in luck Fletch! I just found three photos I took while I was in there (had to be sensitive about how and what I was photographing with people worshipping there). I hope these help!

A Sky Portal is a face with a special Twilight Sky Portal material painted on it. It must have it's normal facing the direction of the flow of light rays... that is it should face "in" to the space. Not "out" away from it.

It is useful if a room is lit only with Sun & Sky, and you are rendering with an Unbiased (progressive) render setting like Easy 09. (we are using Easy 09 in these examples)
A sky portal tells all of the sun and sky rays to "enter through here".
Learn more about sky portals in the User Manual section dedicated to Sky Portals.
There is a Sky Portal material in the Architectural Twilight Material Library. (the blue square) Or, Licensed users can have a bonus sky portal material, video tutorials, scene to download and try out, etc. here.

Here, too, is the rendering with same post-pro of tonemapping as talked about in this post above. This image was rendered after fixing the wood material, changing the floor material, and adding the sky portal.

So, how can we speed up this rendering of Easy 09 or 10?
The directly lit areas clear the fastest. Areas that receive only 2nd or 3rd or lesser bounced light will take longer to clear.
So if we add more direct light to the darker areas, it will clear more quickly.

In this scene, the back of the benches takes a long time to clear. So if we added more light coming from behind the benches, it follows that it should clear more quickly.

Here's the results of adding 2 emitter planes - one near the ceiling, and one back behind the camera. The one at the ceiling is at 400 w/m2 and the one at the back window behind the camera is at 800w/m2.

See attached results, still camera Exposure at 1 and Gamma at 1, NO POST WORK done to image (resized down) Original render at 2400px high.
Noise in this image is clearing significantly faster. Perhaps increasing the power a little more of the 2 emitter planes added will help it clear even faster, and make it look even better before post pro. It is important that these added light planes do not contribute too much light and look un-natural.
