Ascending and Descendig (penrose stairs)

Post by Ron_Bruins » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:48 am

Some images from my attempt to create Escher his 'Ascending and Descending' in Su / Twilight.

I Started with rectangular Boxes/cubes for the different buildings and the staircase as a basic setup. Then continued with modelling more details in, and improving the details over and over.
Also certain areas need rescaling as they seem not to be in the right size related to other objects.

Especially the lighting is a challenge as, obviously, the perspective is impossible so tricks are used to get the view as it is....

Yikes, that would be time consuming!

This should be rendered with square aspect ratio - so that you don't spend time rendering "nothing".
Try a fast lighting studio like this one.

But I'm sure the lighting is critical for the "illusion" to work.

The progress sofar.

I need to do something with the scaling as it doesn't seem to be right compared to the original.
It feels a bit like sculpturing. Starting with a rough piece of stone and slowy sculpture my way through, fortunately I can add pieces I have removed here ;)

The square aspect ratio is much better indeed, but I have a scene now for the angle and I like to make a small video afterwards to see it progressing, therefore I need each image to be exact as the previous one. So I might continue in the current aspectratio and crop the image.

The lighting is indeed the greates challenge as twilight loights in real life, therefore certain pieces of the model get too much light they shouldn't and th eotehr way around. But with some extra planes here and there and some invisible emitters I am getting there. See the attachment.

I'd love to see this animated with the camera hovering around the top to see the perspective trick you used!!

Very Nice

Fantastic, I love to see how the model is starting to take shape with the added detail.

Great job!

I don't know how you were able to manage to get the shadows to work so well.
I would think about a texture/material that looks a bit like it was sketched, and it would be a bit darker grey like the original. The white looks like it's a bit over exposed at the moment.

Thanks!

I am currently rendering an animation on high. Keep it running overnight on an i7 so hopefully it will be done by tomorrow morning. This animation will reveal some secrets 8-)

I did not texture it on purpose as I want the bare model to be finished first and get the lighting right. But having said that I'm indeed looking for the right texture to use, didn't spend too much time on it yet though.
