Newbie renderer WIPs

Post by baz » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:49 am

Hi all, first post here. I'm finally getting my head around the magical mystery tour of rendering. I've read the manuals, watched the vids, and spent hours trying to work out how it all works.

So I thought I'd show you what I'm trying to do, (I almost didn't after looking at a few of the gallery posts here, whew!)

But there must be others like me who don't need, (or necessarily want), photo realistic renders, just a good image which tells the story, in my case, my furniture designs.

I don't expect potential clients to be 'fooled' by these, tho' some will, lets not go there:). What I really want to do is sell them on the idea. So I have tried to put a bit of drama in them, perhaps even my love of what I do and share.

Enough. The following is the best I can do at the moment, I know they are not good enough so C and C's most definitely welcome, but please, please, don't get too technical.

The last one is getting where I want to go.

Thank you Tom.
And hi there Stu, long time no speak. Glad you like the work, got any ideas for possible outlets in Melbourne for stuff like this?
Also, are all the renders on your site done with Twilight?
Baz.

I'm struggling with this one, too grey and lifeless.

I like these designs...they remind me of Japanese calligraphy characters :gj:

Have you seen this thread by Jez? He was asking the same questions you are now.

Thanks Marcus, the designs originate in hand drawn (yikes, on paper!) 'gestures', so I suppose there is a strong connection to caligraphy, never made the connection before tho, thanks for the insight.
The Jez post looks just the thing. 8 pages of posts will take me a while tho.

Baz...all but one or two images on the site rendered with Twilight.

Outlets in Melb?...let me think....

And yes...pretty obvious...an asian flavour to your designs!...the first piece reminds me of a Chinese altar table

the easiest thing to do to get a better render is bevel/round edges.

The most difficult and important is lighting. My advice is stick with simple materials until you figure lighting. Your mats will look weird until they are properly lit. If a basic template looks way off, this is a lighting problem, not mat problem. They are good enough for most cases.
