Pendant strip light lit interiors

Post by blaw789 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 7:51 pm

Hey all,

I have been using Twilight and Kerkythea for several years now and have always been slightly vexed when trying to recreate pendant strip lights, something I have to do often for commercial interior renderings. For the attached image I got sick of trying to recreate the lamps in the fixture and just used an invisible emitter plane to evenly light the whole space and then faked the direct/indirect effect with a single triangle emitter in each fixture. Does it achieve the effect? Anyone had more luck with this than myself?

There are a hundred ways to accomplish a goal. It looks VERY successful here. This is a great image! :^:
If rendering with Easy 09 the triangular emitter face is not necessary, but if rendering with Easy 1-7, it's a good idea. :)

The ceiling grid on the left appears a bit messed up.
This happens if there is a large surface with a texture, when it gets triangulated (when processed by the render engine), it can end up with strange "glitches" like this. To avoid it, subdivide the surface manually every few meters, just to break down the triangles a bit in advance.

Thanks Fletch! Also thanks for pointing me in the direction of the post with the test renders, it will come in handy in the future.

Maybe some kind of vertical line correction would be a plus. ;)

For the vertical line correction did you just use skew in photoshop?

I skimmed over your comment about not needed the rectangle emitters if using easy 9. For multi-light interiors I usually use easy 10 (MLT+BPT if not mistaken), is there a better way to achieve my uplighting if using easy 10? Is easy 10 overkill?

Thanks!

In Photoshop> Select image, Free Transform> right-click> Perspective... tweak handles till happy.
or
Filter>Distort>Lens Correction (or something)

Easy 10 (MLT/Bipt) is overkill when using emitter surfaces for your lighting, in the sense that it takes longer to render than Easy 09 (MLT). But either one works, and Easy 10 is a great setting if you have the time. Easy 10 reads the points and spots better for caustics with glass, that's the major difference.
