5 best free file hosting services

Many commonly used hosting services are annoying and cumbersome. Here are a few you may want to try if you just need to quickly share a large file with someone on the forum. These don't appear to require registration, and some let you hot-link directly to the file.

If you have any feedback, or suggested file hosting services you like, please post them here! (Please don't mention Rapidshare... their service is far too annoying.)

Filefactory user review: 2 of 5 stars

While it is on the list above, it appears to be little better than Rapidshare in this user's experience. They may be easy to upload to, but downloading is not fun.

Also, one must wait something like 12 minutes between downloads, so if there are 2 or more separate files for download, for each file, one must wait 30 seconds and scroll down past a lot of spam, and then wait 12 minutes more, then wait 30 seconds, again, etc.

The download is not, however, deliberately slowed down (as far as this user can tell). While with Rapidshare they deliberately slow the download speed as well.

Box.net seems to be the only one that allows a user to immediately download the desired file.

Windows Live. Just click on "documents" and you can upload public files.

How about DropBox? The storage space (free) is certainly not the biggest (2Gb***) so it may not really be for hosing many and big files forever but it has very cool features on the file sharing side - as well as an extremely easy to use desktop application where it's just a folder where you can drag and drop thus instantly upload/download files without opening your browser.

So basically it is a very efficient collaborative tool.

***If you invite people and/or share folders and such, DB give you additional space up to 8Gb. Even if you accept such an invitation and install their desktop app, it will give you additional space so best is to get invited than just simply registering.

(Anyone needs an invite? :D )
