Barcelona Pavillion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Post by Fletch » Wed Jul 20, 2011 7:43 am

The goal of this exercise is to have a demonstration exterior scene to show how easy it is to take a 3DWarehouse model and turn it into something a little more special using Twilight.

Here is the Twilight Render Ready Scene of the Barcelona Pavillion by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. (It is provided for Licensed users in the Resource section.)
  1. The model was downloaded here from the 3dWarehouse.
This German Pavilion was built for the Universal Exposition of Barcelona of the 1929 from architect Mies van der Rohe. After the exposition it was dismantled and has been reconstructed in 1986. It's one of the most important building of the XX century.
  2. The modeling was then "fixed" here and there by adding a bottom to the pool (so that the water would render accurately), and a few other small changes, such as adding an accurate looking edge to the pool, eliminating the back wall and reversing any back faces.
  3. Then textures were applied, and material templates from Twilight were applied to the textures.
  4. A curving background plane was added with a background image from These Useful Tree Line Backgrounds.
Obviously the materials are not precise as the real thing. If the materials were corrected (such as using a light marble color on the wall behind the bench instead of concrete, and the poor black marble texture on the main pavilion walls), it would take it "up a knotch".

The direction of the sun and shadows is very important.
The good rock texture under the water is also very important. The texture was created by us here at Twilight Render from a photo taken on a beach.

Feel free to open, render, explore the scene.

Hey Fletch

I'm surprised nobody has replied to your post. Great images by the way. :gj:

I thought I would have a go as well so I downloaded the 3D warehouse model and then jumped onto google images to check out some real photos.

My render below was also Easy 8 for about 2 hours with some carefully positioned photos behind the model of the actual location. Stone textures are from Arroway & Marble from my own library. A little bit of PP in Gimp. It was my first exterior render and I'm quite please with it.

Let me know your thoughts

Dan

Nice work, Dan. :)

Where did you find the marble texture? Can you share?
The texture on the ground close up seems odd for some reason. Is the group painted instead of painting the face inside the group?

The Travertine Marble is from Arroway and I don't think I'm allowed to share this but the Dark Mable wall Material is not a problem. Unfortunately it's not high res :( but as they are tiles in this scene rather than a large slab it didn't matter too much

Thanks for the Trevertine dif, bump & ref :gj:
shouldn't the Bump have more detail to it i.e. the holes etc should show

Gareth, I'm not sure what you mean? :! is it that it's too reflective or that the model detail is not quite right? Nice detail diagram :^:

Hi Dan,

it's an error in the model.....the glass material has been applied to the frame.....its a simple fix

...you can't see the error in the rendered image because it's probably too far away....i only noticed it because i was setting up an interior render and spotted it while i was swinging the camera around
