Re: How Fast Are You - Official Twilight Scene - Bauhaus Lamp
My Boyfriends Computer
i7 2600k @ 4.8 Ghz (using a H80 cpu cooler)
16 gig 1600 Mhz
No Video Card (still building the system)
Windows 7 Ultimate
It will be interesting to see how this goes with a SSD and 2x460 Graphics cards
Re: How Fast Are You - Official Twilight Scene - Bauhaus Lamp
Now i wonder what kind of procedure some of u guys use and what it is that makes u render such nice pictures with "low" settings? i cant even get close to the results?? my specs is surely not the best but from the info some of u guys has entered it seems im using decent equipment. and should get same results as some of u easily, but thats just not the case?! so what is it im not doing right?. Here we have a challenge where everyone has the same scene and not aloud to change the settings...and it seem the lamp modell skp i got wich is downloaded from this forum post DONT have anny mats on it? anny way i tried adding them myself accordingly to alll the other posts and what they have put on...still i for the love of "something i dont believe in"!! I CAN NOT! get such results! if u look at "amoark" s post u see hes specs i just a tad worce than mine so why cant i do what he does? annyway here r the result of the lamp skp model:
and this is with mats: why is my result so tiny? how did u get yours so big and nice with same settings?
her i raised the resolution to 900x1500 wich is triple the 300x500 and all i get is this:
windows 7 home Premium 64bit
nvidia gtx 285
sketchup 8 pro twilight full

Obviously you screwed up the scene pretty good. I suggest downloading it fresh and trying again. You should just need to hit render and nothing else.

Agree completely with chris.
(be sure you are using Twilight v.1.1 or later)
- :>: Simply download the file...which is READY TO RENDER,
- :>: open it in SketchUp and
- :>: click the Render button.
Additional tips:
- Do not change any settings before rendering.
- Free up as many resources on your machine as reasonable for the test. (don't run other CPU-intensive things like zipping files, processing video, or another rendering at the same time... but continuing to model in SU is fine)
- Be sure the "fit to view proportions" is unchecked (this should be the default).

Well, at least you know where you stand.
Desktop PC Intel Core i7 2600K(8 threads at 3.40GHz) 16GB DDR3 1TB HDD $1,049.99
In perspective, 5 years ago $6000 would get you a 4 core at 2.2ghz.

here is my poor home computer. strange thing is, i have 4 gb ram. relatively slower cpu but not that slow. when i look at the result on this topic it seems reasonably priced athlons performs better thatn intel.
it took 2:42

You need to look at the speeds of each and prices of each. Did they cost the same price? If so, then perhaps your assessment is correct.
But if you want to compare speeds, you must look at the speed, not the RAM... RAM only helps you render larger scenes and lets you work on other things more easily while rendering, it does not make it render faster. However, if using WinXP, it only allows 2Gb to all the programs you are using, even if you have 4Gb, so it doesn't matter how much ram you have over 3Gb (1Gb for operating system+2 for programs)
The speed and number of cores/threads for the CPU are what matter.
The athalon is at 2.91Ghz with 2 cores. (assumed 2 cores/2 threads) 2x2.91 = 5.82Ghz of processing power for the job.
The intel is at 2.0Ghz with 2 cores. 2x2.0 = 4Ghz of processing power for the job.
This athalon should complete the job in 69% of the time taken by the intel. (4Ghz/5.82Ghz=.69)
1m48s v 2m42s... 108 secs vs 162 secs = 108/162 = .66 - pretty close to prediction.
