Re: Carboard Texture Study
nice.
now work on bump map for the sticker on the box, and give some love to your floor material.

Fletch,
A bump map on the label? To make the letters stand out?
What changes to the floor? I think I was using a diffuse, spec, and bump image on the floor.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

bump to make it look like the sticker is stuck to the side of the box. it's currently very flat.
the floor seems to lack reflection, maybe it's not shiny enough?

Thanks Fletch.
I polished up the floor a bit. You were right, not shiny enough. I used the Polished stone template and bumped it up to 50K.
Tried to make my own bump map for the label, but didn't work out too well.
50% gray would be even or flat correct? White raises up, black down?
Not quite sure how to achieve this. Make a border around the label, set it to white and place in the bump channel?
Thanks,

Re: Carboard Texture Study
Sorry, wrong version.
Re: Carboard Texture Study
floor is looking good.
to make the bump, try opening the sticker image in a photo editor.
over the top of it, work to make your bump map.
copy the bump map from the cardboard material and paste it correctly oriented over the layer with the sticker.
try copying that and if you are using photoshop use "filter>render>clouds" with your color swatches set to black and white.
now set that cloud layer to multiply, so that it is overlaying on top of the cardboard bumps.
delete the layer with the original sticker pic, and create a layer on the bottom that is either black, grey, or white.
now set the bump of the cardboard layer to have some opacity like, 20
now play with the opacity of the cloud layer to be something similar.
save file
flatten all layers and save as .jpg or .png name it "sticker-bump"
now use that in the material definition for the sticker.
now you will have to render, then change the layers in your photo editor layered file until you achieve a look you are satisfied with.
great way to learn, this - using simple little scenes like this.

Thanks Fletch.
First attempt at making Sticker bump. Only rendered at 5 passes to make sure this is the look we are going for.
Great instructions by the way. Your eye for detail is amazing But I'm learning something new every day.

that's looking good! Nice work. I think the bump of the cardboard corrugation is not subtle enough. But it's really good.
the top piece of cardboard on the floor is intersecting geometry with the ones below it. It's not casting the same edge shadow like the others where it's sitting on the ones below.
I like these little learning scenes. they are perfect.
the last thing would be to make a great box knife model. that one is ok for quick testing, but this close-up it clearly needs more work.
