How do I make sure that when I add ies data to a light, that it is in the proper orientation?
For instance the ies data for a night light looks like the attached. I have provided a link to the fixture (MSN-A-120-W). I have no idea if the orientation is correct or where to place the light in relation to the fixture.
I added the small point light after.

Re: Correct position of .ies
The IES light shape is a rough approximation of the "throw" of the light fixture. So you will then rotate the light to throw the light how you would imagine the light should be thrown.
Typically I start with a spot light pointing vertically down at the floor, then load the ies file.
It would appear from the image you are showing here that you have it oriented correctly.
