Sharp corners = unrealistic

Post by Fletch » Sun Oct 11, 2009 7:24 pm

It's a common topic in almost any forum on rendering.

It's simple to model a cube in SketchUp, but when you render it, it's obviously a rendering. This is because it has sharp corners. Most things in real life do not have sharp corners. Unfortunately, cabinetry, desks, window sills, even buildings in SketchUp have sharp corners, because it's so easy to do.

So the best thing is to find a quick tool to soften your model's corners with the least pain.

Luckily there is a free SketchUp ruby script that is a great plugin for rounding the corners on furniture and other objects.

This comparison is done using Fredo's Bevel tool at .1 cm offset, this adds the least to file sizes and took about 3s to complete the bevel of all edges for this test desk. Each rendered at just over 2m on Medium+ setting.

I have actually started using this plugin for heavy modeling in SketchUp. It is an ESSENTIAL tool in SketchUp for me after only 2 days using the latest release. :^:

This plug-in would have saved me a lot of time when I re-constructed those Rubik's cubes for rendering.

I just have to say that the more I use this plugin, the more amazing it becomes - Aside from Twilight Render, it's simply one of the best plugins ever written for SketchUp. :rspkt:

Definitely a "must have".

I started using SU with version 5 and as plugins had been available since version 4, there were already lots of them - but mainly "simple" ones (although some of these simple ones are in fact very good time savers).

But what these guys have been doing lately is absolutely incredible (and of course, Fredo is one of the top contributors akthough I would definitely not lessen many others). :^: :^: :^:

I'm now trying this plugin on some furniture models...
Where do you guys find time to read the 9 page instruction manual and play around with the plugin? I mean it just feels overwhelming at times, all these different plugins.

I just watched the YouTube vid... never really looked at the manual
it's only got a few buttons, and they can only do certain things... and the video was quite well done.
