Volumetric Lighting - Special Material (Light Beams)

Post by shura » Sat Nov 21, 2009 2:24 pm

hi,

i have read on Kerkythea forum that KT is able to do volumetric lighting... to me this is a very intresting feature, but until now I couldn't find the time to explore the KT universe...
Am I assuming right that when KT can do volumetrics, there is a chance to see this feature in a future release of Twilight?
(provided we users will be desirous enough to go on your nerves with endless wishlists;)

The reason why I have the guts to ask, is that I have found something like a "fake-volumetric" effect in Twilight. The render you see is done with two spotlights sitting inside of a geometry that has a SSS material applied on the outside. The camera is inside of the geometry as well. It does not render with progressive presets, but is kinda fun to play with...

cheers
alex

Preset 2. Low was easy going, the others were too slow for quick testing...

Sorry, should have said : Easy 2. Low

Here is the skippy for you to test with. I dont see much potential in this because there is a lot of strong sparkling and stuff, really hard to control.
Also when there is geometry behind the beam it interrupts the effect immediately - anyway still very interesting...

see you
a.

That's a cool effect shura!

You are right that the KT core can do "global fog" volumetrics. However, it usually renders pretty slow. Your method is much faster.

I modified the material so that it doesn't require the camera and lights to be inside the 'volume'.

You can see the volumetrics start and stop at the boundaries.

Could you repost the file so we could test it as well?

It uses a material library, so I'll have to put together the library first.

It is important to wish! One never knows when it will be granted! ;)
