Can sphere (with facets) be rendered as smooth?

Post by slimbolino » Wed Jan 12, 2011 2:00 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to render a 'chrome ball' in a box (as a reflection test probe) and I've found that Sketchup's sphere is facetted, and applying a shiny TR material simply results in a render of a reflective facetted ball! ;) I'd really like it to render as a perfectly smooth spherical mirror without having to first create geometry that simply has millions of faces and makes the model 'heavy'.

I know some renderers provide a threshold angle parameter above which facets are calculated as being smooth. Does TR have such a control? If so, what sort of angle parameter needs to be dialed in for a typical SU sphere?

Many thanks,
Slim

-Triple click the sphere.
-Right click > Soften/Smooth edges. Set the angle to 30. Close the Soften/Smooth edges window.
-With the sphere still selected, press G. Press the "Create" button.
-Render with Twilight.

I assume the sphere is a group...
So all you need to do is simply explode the group in SU...
If need be, you can re-select the mesh and then re-group the sphere...
Now hit render and see the difference... ;)

Thanks for your speedy replies. The right-click smoothing trick has made all the difference!
