To fake fire flames in Twilight:
1 take a picture of a flame lowering your camera exposure so the background appears black (or just look up some photos of flames with black backgrounds in Google).
2 Open in GIMP, right click on your layer, select Add layer mask and choose the option to use a greyscale copy of the layer as the layer mask.

3 Save as PNG and ignore the warning.
4 Import the PNG as an image (not as a texture) into SU and position it.
5 Place a point light in front of it and make it any color you like according to the type of flame (I used yellow-orange). It should look like this:

A render with preset 02, made in 16 seconds. I turned off the sun and made the sky color a bluish grey.

And the SKP file in SU7 format.
Feel free to play around, but be careful when taking your own fire photos.

what settings does twilight use when no settings are selected?

it seems to me this is the effect i would expect (darkness all around), but as soon as a preset is selected the scene lights up even though the only light source is the point light in the flames?????

It is supposed to use "Low", but it appears that when you are opening a scene from another computer, where paths are different, it defaults to a bare-bones ray-tracer. That's something I'll have to fix. Anyway, to get more or less the same look, make sure sky is black background color. That should help.
