Yup, HDRI is the way to go for really soft, "overcast" shadows.

-Triple click the sphere.
-Right click > Soften/Smooth edges. Set the angle to 30. Close the Soften/Smooth edges window.
-With the sphere still selected, press G. Press the "Create" button.
-Render with Twilight.
