Depending on the render setting you are using, and the "look" you are going for there are many options.

My first instinct is to say:

I suggest Easy 09 render setting.

Next, I would try downloading these fantastic new and improved "lampshade" libraries from the Red Carpet Resources section. The "matte" version will be great for canvas and most any render setting.
These must be used with a model with real-world thickness, so even a thin sheet would have 2 sides and a very thin "thickness".
Subject: Matte Lampshade Material Library (39 colors)
Subject: Glass Lampshade Material Library (37 colors)

Finally, if you want it to simply "glow" like it's lit from behind, the "Lampshades Fast Fake" material library that ships with Twilight would work great.
