weird material effect in TwilightV2

Post by tuna57 » Tue May 17, 2016 4:30 am

I have a strange situation crop up from time to time with TW's material editor. Select a material and I get a weird color showing in the material edit window. I've attached a screen shot to show what's happening. If I run a render the object will render with the odd color. The materials in question are loaded in my Sketchup materials folder and applied with the paint bucket. Any idea why this happens and whats the cause ? Is this a problem with the material image that TW "reads" it wrong somehow ?

Is there a material applied to the component or group?
In Monochrome view, are you looking at the back or front faces of the object in question?

Fletch, I was immediately going to reply " of course there is no back faces and no materials applied to groups or components. Before I potentially made an a@@ out of myself copied the offending model and double checked ! Made a copy of the model that was showing the behavior. Double checked everything and repainted . I use the triple click thing when I'm painting stuff like this , so I'm sure to get all sides and I'm painting in the group. Posting a screen shot of the render. F.Y.I. the materials where I've seen this behavior are out of a couple of material packs I downloaded from the SketchUcation store. I've only seen it with a few of the materials , not all of them ?

Typically it is just as Fletch said, that the back faces are showing and what is getting rendered is the non-visible front face painted with a different material. However, I can see in your screen shot that the name of the material is "rusted-plate" something or other. And since you double checked the model and it looks good, my second thought is that the image you are using for the texture isn't one that the KT engine can handle. Can you post the texture? This can occur with 'indexed' PNG's, GIF's, or any unrecognized non-typical image type.

Fletch , Chris , I'm going to post this over on the SketchUcation forum also. The materials in question are from one of their material packs ( suc - industrial metal - full ). Hesitant to post the .skm file for one of the problem materials. Don't want to step on any copyright toes. Side note , did a quick test , the majority of the materials in this "pack" exhibit this behavior.

Can you PM me just one of the textures in question? I agree, don't post the SKM.

Chris, I got a reply from massimo over on the sketchUcation forum to this issue. He said the images in this texture pack were saved in "indexed color mode" and need to be converted to RGB mode to work in Twilight. Scratching head now :? . Is this something that can be done inside the Twilight material editor. Opened a test model and fooled around a bit but not seeing how I would do it on Twilight side ? Is this better done on the SU side of things ? Was able to export the .png image out of the .skm file and converted image to RGB in Gimp. Clueless on how to get image back into the .skm file. :wall: Imported the converted image into model and it renders fine. Now to figure this whole .skm thing out. :wall:

No, you have to open the textures in Gimp or Photoshop (or similar) and resave them as RGB. In Gimp, open the image, go to Image -> Mode and change it to RGB. Then save it. I don't know how that is done in PS but probably similarly.

Cool.

So a .skm is actually a zip file that's been renamed. Change the extension to .zip, then open with your favorite zip editor (7zip, windows, etc.). Extract the image and edit it, then put it back in the zip file. If you are using windows 'Compressed Folder' thingy, you should just be able to drag and drop the edited image. Then rename the extension back to .skm.
