Stained Glass Window
Stained Glass Window
Hi everyone, my first post here I just downloaded the trial version and am trying a little test.
A couple months ago there was a Stained Glass Challenge over in the Sketchucation forums: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtop ... +challenge
I am trying to re-render my Sketchucation entry using Twilight, and am very satisfied with the way the window itself came out, but I'm not getting the effect of the sunlight on the wall I'm looking for...I just need a little help, I'm sure. There are nice bright colors from the sunlight on the sill, but they fade away before reaching the wall - well they are there on the wall, but very, very faint.
I used architectural glass-common, generic-soft on the walls, and sunlight intensity of 100. I used easy preset #9 for about 30 mins.
I'm trying to make it look something like the second picture(rendered with a different software):

Re: Stained Glass Window
Hi d12dozr, Welcome
The colored light shining on the wall thru the window is called a "Caustic". This word refers also to shiny spots that bounce off of shiny surfaces, or refract through surfaces, like the glass sphere in the Intermediate Video Tutorial for instance.
Easy09 will not produce caustics from the Physical Sun and Sky. If you use a light emitting surface behind the window, then you will see caustics with 09
Easy10 will ultimately be easiest/best, as it produces caustics with any light source, but renders most slowly.
Easy02-07 will produce caustics with most light sources, and be quite quick to render... the higher the setting, the higher the quality.

d12dozr,
Please see attached example. Single Pane Glass version rendered on Easy02-low setting in 15s Double Pane Glass version looks nicer, in my opinion, rendered on Easy02-low setting in 23s

Re: Stained Glass Window
Thanks Fletch,
I tried "Realistic Glass" with double panes on my model using Preset #10 and now no light is getting through at all! I also downloaded your model and am dissecting it to see what settings you have used...hopefully I can figure it out from that. BTW, the edge settings are really great, especially the option for lineweight. If you want, i can upload my model for you to test...
Thanks again,
Marcus

Re: Stained Glass Window
when using "realistic glass" on the "Thick" window, render with Tech Photon Map setting #9 or 10 It will render in about 4minutes, but it does render quite nicely.

Re: Stained Glass Window
Glad you posted that image above Fletch, I had no idea those settings were available, I had not looked in the Tech settings!
They don't mean much to me, but at least I know they are there!

Re: Stained Glass Window
They are there for the convenience of Kerkythea users who purchase Twilight. Now they don't have to ask "Where is the old Kerkythea setting called..."
Re: Stained Glass Window
Update: It is no longer necessary to use the Tech settings... you can render on any setting from Easy 2-7 and see the Stained Glass caustics with physical Sun and Sky.
If you render with Easy 09, you must use a plane in SketchUp that is painted with a Light Emitter material outside of the window shining in.

Re: Stained Glass Window
Please guide me on making a Stained Glass material for Twilight Render, all my tries failed I end up with a very bright window, but no light in the room, or nice caustics. I want to render it with progressive (I know that for Easy9 I have to use LEM instead of Sun).
I tried using realistic glass and applied the texture (glass with thickness, but only one face textured, the other was clear realistic glass), also I tried with single face Architectural Glass material, but it looks I am doing something wrong.
If I don't ask to much, please tell me how to make that material, It doesn't need to have solid mullions, they can be transparent as well.
Thank you.
