Aged materials by "Extremefatalist"

Post by Gaieus » Mon Oct 05, 2009 9:41 am

Last night I was playing around with a material pack posted on the Kerkythea Forum a while ago. To tell the truth, I have never been able to fully figure out the ins andf outs of the settings as I lack the knowledge to apply these instructtions: "Be careful when applying any of the materials to an object to 'play' with the thickness and fading attributes of the wireframe procedural in all the channels (weights too). Usually the rate has to be the same in all the channels. Have in mind, also, that those attributes need different values in accordance with each object's scale, for giving good results. "

Anyway, as for "wireframe procedurals", I figured out that the "aging" always happens somewhere around the edges but not too much better how to utilize it (and I think you cannot do everything you otherwise could with SU models exported there and maybe it would need some loop subdivision but I can't apply it on SU models because faces disappear). Anyway, here are some test results - two Twilight renders in this post and a Twilight render vs. "tweaked" version of the same in Kerkythea (it allows to modify Library materials there) in the next post (the board allows three attachments in one post):

And nnow the second test; the first image still a "eaw" Twilight output while I added some "bronzy, brownish" shininess to it in the second image in Kerkythea (as well as an infinite plane and a spherical sky). Probably something better to reflect would have been cool so that we can see if we can see some "bronzish" reflections but I am still happy with my humble and puny results (although I think I overdid the reflection on an aged bronze...)

I obviously do not master heavily layered, procedural materials.

Extreme... had rather liberal way to create materials (breaking energy rules) and those materials usually worked with some particular setting or render method (usually ray tracing). It might be hard to make those work. It would be great if Chris manages to recreate something similar, but easy to control - perhaps a new template type.

Csaba, i think you are very close to invent a nice "Zsolnai keramia" material :)

Tell me about it - I have been thinking about creating something like that ever since I read the material manual of KT and seen these layered, procedural materials.

For reference to others, here is a link to some image hits in Google.
