LiDAR scanning

Post by that.skpguy » Sun Oct 16, 2022 4:04 am

I've recently upgraded my phone to one with LiDAR scanning capabilities because I need it for my work as an interior architect. So to test it out, I scanned this small statuette on my desk about 3.5" tall.

The base render is nice and all, but it didn't give me the flair I was looking for, so I added a couple of lights to enhance the render, one for the key-light and one for the rim-light.

What do you guys think?

Very sharp mate. Looks like it could be another one of those game changing steps in development. :^:

Curios about the LIDAR app:
  • What type of file format does it generate?
  • Can you rotate the file?
  • How do you use the output with TR?
  • What are the requirements for installing/using the application?
Your renders really make this look very interesting.

Thanks Dave!

What are the requirements for installing/using the application?
I'm using a free app called Scaniverse on iOS, it works best on the Pro model iPhones from 12 onwards, essentially any iPhone with LiDAR capability. But if your iPhone doesn't have Lidar, then it switches to photogrammetry mode.

What type of file format does it generate?
It can generate: FBX, OBJ, GLB, USDZ, STL, PLY, LAS

How do you use the output with TR?
After experimenting with a lot of file combination, for my workflow, I find that exporting as .OBJ from the app, then convert it to .DAE through Blender and bringing that to Skp works the best. Once it's on Skp then it's all fair game from there.

Can you rotate the file?
Sure, I ultimately use the 3d model on SketchUp just like any other group/component.

Your renders really make this look very interesting.
Thank you! I hope it this answered your questions.

Thanks for the response. Yes, you answered all of my questions. My laptop died so I cannot experiment with it.

I do have one additional question though. When you scan something, how do you get a full 3D object (how do you get a full 360% view)?

This all seems pretty interesting.

Yes, you just go around the object, keeping your device steady. Just like taking a video, the app will take care of the rest. :)

How do I determine if my iPhone has LiDAR capability? Is that part of the Scaniverse app?

UPDATE:I went to the App Store on my iPad and read about Scaniverse and installed the app. Will try playing with it later on. Now if I could just revive my laptop (or buy a new one) this could be really interesting.

Once again, thanks a lot for introducing this capability. :whoot:

I would like to suggest that you share/post this info on the SketchUcation forum. I bet you would create a lot of interest.

Fascinating topic, not sure I can see myself with a phone that can handle it though, too much of an old git. I am however, looking forward to a new pc so I can get back to rendering myself. The poor ol' girl has done me proud for a liong time and it is probably time to go on to lighter duties.
