cpu and graphics card look :^: to me. I'm no expert with computer builds.

you could compare it to others on the last couple pages of this thread, but your machine sounds better than most of them. ;)

Ta Fletch, I am just well out of date with hardware, clueless in fact becoause I have just not kept up. I was looking at my ATARI 520 STFM yesterday, no idea why I still have it apart from nostalgia. 48k of pc goodness..............

I am almost certainly going to replace the dead monitor with one of these.....https://www.cclonline.com/xub2796qsu-b1 ... ync-black/

My pc's generally last a decade or so.

:^: Glad to hear you will have a new machine to crank out some great images. You will love having unbiased renders in short time. I nearly exclusively render Easy09+AI Fastforward denoise even for a few seconds of prelim it's  :^:

I just ordered the hardware for a similar built with some more horse power.
For 3D rendering and modelling you need multi-core CPUs, fast RAM (bandwidth is important when loading geometries and textures) and a good GPU.

Mine configuration is:
  • i9-13900K (it doesn't need any presentation  )
  • 64GB DDR5 5600MHz RAM (2x32GB, waiting for a future upgrade at 128GB)
  • Gigabyte RTX 3070 Eagle LHR 8GB DDR6
  • 7 140mm fans and the Corsair iCUE H170i ELITE CAPELLIX inside a Corsair AirFlow D7000 case
  • Gigabyte Z790 Aours Elite AX motherboard (nice to have: 6 SATAIII, 4 M.2 connectors, PCIe 5.0, support 6Ghz overclock on the i9-13900K)
  • 1x1TB Samsung 980 Pro NVME
  • 2x1TB Samsung 870 Evo SSD
  • Corsair HX1200 Platinum (1200W power supply)

With such a powerful CPU you need a lot of cooling. I will suggest upgrading to a AIO cooler, otherwise you'll easily get a lot of throttling from the CPU.

I also have a server from the 2012s, it's an IBM x3650 M4 with two Intel Xeon E5-2690 (they were the top notch at that time and provide 16 core, 32 in hyper threading), 96GB of RAM, 6x500GB SSD in RAID 1+0 and 2x970 Pro in RAID 1. It's really fast but there's a huge gap with the recent CPUs. Your new build and my new build are surely faster, but the best CPUs for heavy workloads is the Intel Xeon. A Xeon workstation with similar performance as ours will cost about the double, but it ensure more realiability and efficiency over time.

Also, I've done some research on the DDR4 vs DDR5 debate. It turns out that DDR4 have lower latency, which is good for gaming and some kind of activities, but have significantly less bandwidth, which is bad for application that move big amount of data in and out the memory. For example, zipping is much faster on DDR5, and so is Adobe Illustrator which makes use of vectorial graphics. Thinking about the future, your CPU is compatible with DDR5 but the chipset isn't, so in the future when DDR5 will become more affordable, you could make an upgrade.

With Fastforward Denoise addon for Twilight Easy 10 (MLT+BiPT) is actually seemingly nearly as fast as Easy 09. This means You have the greatest render setting at your fingertips and at FullHD the image is client ready on 12 threads in 4 to 8 passes. This means with 32 threads you will have them ready in 2-3 passes, and fast. :!:

Spec changed slightly so not as fast as your spec but not as expensive either. The innitial spec I looked at was nearly £5k.

1 x Chillblast On-site Warranty - 5 Years (3 Years Parts, Labour and Callout, 2 Years Labour only)
1 x Fractal Design Torrent Compact Case - Black
1 x Intel Core i5 13600K Raptor Lake-S CPU
1 x Noctua NH-D15 Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler with two NF-A15 Fans
1 x Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (2x 32GB) 3200MHz DDR4
1 x Samsung 980 PRO 1TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD
1 x Pre-Install Cabling for Additional Solid State Drive
1 x Pre-Install Cabling for Additional Hard Drive
1 x Microsoft Windows 11 Home Advanced
1 x Corsair RM850x 850W Modular 80+ Gold PSU
1 x Choice GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GPU
1 x ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi D4 Motherboard
1 x Seagate IronWolf Pro 4TB NAS Hard Drive, 3.5 inch, 7200RPM, 128MB Cache, CMR
1 x Logitech MK540 Wireless Combo Keyboard and Mouse Set - UK English

If you see any flaws let me know please, not finalised until the finish building. This has to last me for a decade or so.

Is ddr4 and ddr5 swappable? Later upgrade path?

I think your configuration is very capable and balanced. I would make it a DDR5 build, looking for future upgrades in the next years. DDR4 is the previous generation of chipset, RAM and CPUs. You could lower the specs on the video card and invest in DDR5. Video cards gets obsolete faster and last less than any other component.

Be aware that HDDs are very slow compared to the overall machine capabilities. May be you want archiving space, but 4TB on HDD is a lot if you store big files and access them frequently. It will be your bottleneck, and it's a huge one. Also don't expect much relaiability from Seagate NAS series.. if you don't want to spend in SSDs, than give a look at Western Digital Ultrastar 7K6 (Hard Disk 3,5 4TB Western Digital Ultrastar 7K6 HUS726T4TALE6L4 SATA III 256MB), they are one of the best HDDs out there in the consumer market (at the moment I have four of them in my QNAP NAS and they are amazing).

Have yuo considered building a RAID with two or more HDDs/SSDs?

I am a disabled ex soldier on a disability pension which means I have saved a long time for this. I would lver to get more but there ya goes. Going to ask about the ddr5 though. The hdd will for a lot of the time have itunes and renders along with textures, I think it will be ok importing to the ssd.

I suppose you live in UK so may be import fees are very expensive due to brexit.

I paid about 3100€ for my configuration, but it's a DIY project. While doing my research on the subject, I found on a famous italian reseller a configuration like mine with warranty and other extras at about the same price (400€ more expensive).
I'm asking why you have to pay 5k pounds. The RTX 3080 is more expensive than the 3070, but I don't think it justifies such a difference.

Give it a try: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computer ... 90-liquid/

You need to choose "Deliver to: UK" on the top right corner and do your selection. As of now the Z790 motherboards will become available on at the end of december, but you get an idea of a honest price.

For example, for 3698£ you get:
- i9-13900K
- 64GB 5200MHz DDR5
- nVidia RTX 3080 10GB
- ASUS ROG Maximum Hero Z790
- 1TB Samsung 980 Pro NVME (you can choose between a lot of storage options)
- Corsair 850W power supply
- 6x fans
- AIO liquid cooler
- Windows 11 Home
- 3 years warranty

They deliver to UK :^:
