rendering metal

Post by JPost » Tue Jan 24, 2023 4:36 pm

Hi!

I built old cannon model and try to render it. But there is something interesting.

When i use progressive rendering method, metal is normal.
When i use my own custom method. Then metal turns black. Custom method is changed High+. Some years ago there was little problem with High renderings - there was some colored curves on pics. I got some tips and changed it. Everything worked well.

Maybe there are some wrong settings. Also when i use some other material templates like wood "flat" or "gloss" everything is OK.

Maybe someone can help me. What i am doing wrong?

Hi JPost, please share custom setting with us, and the scene. (post link to scene, or send to me via PM if you don't wish to share on the forum)

Or, try the Technical settings. Render Settings>Express>Tech>Photon Mapping

Regardless - with your scene I would most definitely put a ground plane that is 50% grey as a start, and render with Easy 08.

I tried tech and photon mapping.
PhotonMap low quality works. Other versions are still black.

This is not what you are going to want to hear, but I can find nothing wrong with the scene.
The canon renders correctly no matter which render setting I choose.

To improve the lighting I added the infinite plane object from Extensions>Twilight V2>Objects>Infinite Plane
I applied a medium gray with a slighting warm hue to the infinite plane.
Placed the plane 0.5cm below the canon.

This scene renders, for me with V2Pro and Fastfoward Denoise add-on in 15 seconds with Easy 09. (corei9 laptop with 12 threads, and Nvidia Geforce RTX)

Remapped the texture with Twilight render texture mapping funcion for cylindrical mapping (had to explode and regroup the component of the canon barrel and place the axis properly first)

Used ACES Post-Process alogrithm and it looks better.

Download scene sent via PM inbox.

By the way - apparently most objects are painted groups. It is not recommended to paint groups. You must paint faces so that you can texture/UV map the mesh properly.

I will be sending you an updated link with the UV mapping updated on the object.

You can re-download the scene from the original link I sent to you in the private message.
Here it is with better mapping - still needs more work, but it's better.
this render was 2.5 minutes on Easy 09 with Fastforward AI denoise

do you think that the color of textures makes a huge difference?

IMO - yes. I also think the color of the wheels is too light and that the skater adds a lot as well. Again, IMO the wheels would not be that light in color for a cannon is as old as the one in the drawing appears to be. However, I do like the model/render over all. :gj: :^:
