twilight and maxwell

Post by jonorman » Tue Sep 22, 2009 7:46 pm

Just had to make a little test and compare twilight to a heavy duty render like maxwell... (just a quick test) I really really like twilight. :D
twilight render bigger cause it takes a lot less time to render.

hello jonorman

nice renders!
can you specify the render times?

imho the maxwell render is closer to reality.
but the TL one is very good also.

best regards!
everything is possible ... at least to render

Comes down to refraction and caustics, never tried these in TL, not even sure if they exist. I believe those effects must be possible as KT has them.

the twilight render is aprox 20 hours, it was good after half the time but i let it go. The maxwell render is over 30 hours, it was going on one of my home servers. reached SL 27,5
The major difference i see is the caustics, but never the less, twilight does a great job, think further releases will improve it further.. looking forward to see the path of this program.

Check the presets in the "Tech" folder, there's a bunch with support for caustics. Majid has even shown a Twilight render of a glass prism decomposing a ray of white light into its component colors, but I don't know what preset he used.

Hi Jonorman, Welcome! :D
I do not know your lighting set up, but am guessing you rendered your scene using Easy preset #9. It WILL render caustics, but only with light emitting surfaces.

If you want to simply choose Easy #10 and render again, I'm guessing you will instantly see caustics with no messing with lighting further.

Please re-post the one with caustics. (it will render slower, as it will now be calculating caustics :D )

While we are VERY happy you like Twilight, may we ask that you please avoid comparing engines... it's not worth it.

We just want people to "render happy". :D
As long as you and client are happy, that's ultimately all that matters, right?

People are just too sensitive about it, and as I, personally, can only claim "expertise" in about 4 different rendering programs/engines, I can tell you I would have great difficulty in setting up 2 scenes to render in a fair comparison in any them.

Also, take care with your materials. Twilight supports dispersion (the rainbow sparkles) via libraries. Did you use the Diamond setting in the Gems library? It has "scientific IOR" (NK) and dispersion.
