This was for Pete's "Render this: SSS" thread in SketchUcation.
I made two 30-minute renders with Twilight, one with Easy 09 (aka MLT or Metropolis Light Transport) and another with Easy 10 (aka Bidirectional MLT). Spot the differences between MLT and Bi-directional MLT.
Easy 09 (MLT)
Easy 10 (Bi-directional MLT)
I'm waiting for Pentti to give a good explanation of the differences.
Here's the file so you can see the settings used:

Re: Next time you ignore kitty, the dog shall pay.
cat's eyes are shining in #10.
glass lenses around edges are showing caustics better (bright line)
caustics from #10 work with all light sources.
cuastics from #9 work only with emitters.
change all light sources to be from a light emitting material instead of spots or point lights and re-render #9, should look similar.

Re: Next time you ignore kitty, the dog shall pay.
Thanks for the info.
I changed the outer material to plexiglass for this one, again rendered with Easy 10: Here I stacked the three renders together and altered the eyes a little bit to match those of my cat:

Hi Miguel,
Great renders. Is it the glow for the plexiglass being more pronounced in the 2nd render?
I tried this challenge last night but failed miserably
Didn't even post results for fear of being shamed out of SCF and here.

Thanks, Danbou.
Rich: Yes, it seems to be something glowy going on there. I'm not an expert in render methods, so I guess the reason why the first one does not have this glow must be what Fletch said: It's actually caustics coming from the point light. Since the first one was done with regular MLT, it only casts rays from the camera, and not from the light sources; since I had a point light behind the cube, there's no way on Earth enough rays are going to hit exactly that point. But if I had used an emitter, then some rays will hit the surface and perhaps I could have seen the same effect. The second one, Bi-directional MLT, casts rays from both the camera and the light sources, that's why it has no trouble rendering these special FX.
Bottom line: Easy 09 is cool. Easy 10 is awesome.
Then again, I'm no expert, so take this with a grain of salt. No, make it a cupful of salt.
Two more from the same "Render this" thread.
For this one, I only changed the sky to "sky color", and set it to white. Material is the blue gum from the library, and exposure was raised a lot. For this one, I placed two emitters: A light blue one to the right and a yellowish one to the left. There's no sun or sky. I used settings similar to the ones I posted here:

I also did the following in GIMP:
-Added some white airbrush around the eyes
-Lowered the Blue channel curve to make it warmer
-Raised the "All channels" curve.
